Gaels can’t stop Cowgirls

The Clarion-Goldfield/Dows girls rebounded in a big way here Friday night, topping St. Edmond, 46-29.

After falling to Webster City on Thursday, the Cowgirls led throughout, improving to 10-10 on the season and 6-7 in the North Central Conference.

Courtney Harle had 11 points with Raven Kinnetz and Vanessa Kolb adding 10 each for C-G/D, which has now won three of its last four overall.

“Our defense finally came out,” Cowgirl head coach Kevin Kakacek said. “We didn’t come out strong on Thursday, but we competed here. Being off of school for a whole week can make it hard to get back into the flow, but I thought the girls did a good job.”

For the Gaels (2-16. 1-11), Macey Mason had eight points, with both Jacque Oberg and Erin Flattery posting seven each.

“Clarion-Goldfield/Dows played great defense,” SEHS head coach Steve Neuberger said. “We knew they would really make it difficult on us and that’s what they did. We had trouble making shots and when you fall into a 10-point hole against them, it can feel like a whole lot more.”

The Cowgirls opened a 12-4 lead after one quarter of action, as Kinnetz scored five. That lead was pushed to 14 late in the second, as both Harle and Kolb combined for eight in the period.

Kinnetz had the highlight of the game, knocking down a three-point at the end of the third quarter from 35 feet. The sophomore also had five steals and five rebounds.

“The offense took a while to get going, but we had both balance shooting and balance scoring,” Kakacek said. “We told the girls at the half to take their time and work for a good shot. We hit our goals on defense and that was great to see.”

Both Harle and Emily Kapka had seven rebounds each. Clarion-Goldfield/Dows had 14 steals as a team.

Flattery led the Gaels with eight rebounds, with Brea McNeil adding five and Devyn Scott four.

The Cowgirls take on No. 5 (Class 3A) Algona on Monday, with St. Edmond heading to Webster City that same night.
