Gael girls pass first tourney test

Steve Neuberger admitted there was a time early in the first quarter where he was a little concerned about Saturday night’s Class 2A regional opener.

But instead of getting down with leading scorer and rebounder Erin Flattery bothered by foul trouble, the St. Edmond girls came together, scoring a convincing 51-29 victory over Belmond-Klemme inside the Gael gym.

St. Edmond (3-18 overall) advances to Tuesday’s Region 2 quarterfinal at No. 12 Aplington-Parkersburg (19-2).

Jacque Oberg scored a game-high 12 points, with Brea McNeil and Cambrie McBride adding 11 each. Oberg and McBride had 12 combined steals, with McNeil grabbing eight rebounds.

“These girls just never give up,” Neuberger said. “Erin’s had a great year for us, leading us in several categories, but when she had to come out, Brea, Jacque, Cambrie, Devyn Scott. Everybody just stepped right up.”

Scott, one of six seniors on the roster, scored four points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench, filling much of the time vacated by Flattery.

“Devyn is a team player first and foremost,” Neuberger said. “We’ve had her coming off the bench, but she could easily be a starter. She comes in, plays hard and gives us quality production.”

McNeil, another senior playing for the final time on her home floor, scored seven in the first quarter as St. Edmond raced out to a 12-5 lead. Oberg and McBride recorded 11 of the 13 second quarter points, as the cushion grew to as many as 13.

Macey Mason finished with seven points and four rebounds, Abby Landwehr grabbed four boards and Leah Neverman had six rebounds.

“I know for these seniors this is going to be a special memory for them to have,” Neuberger said. “We had an incredible student section, great support from the parents and came away with a win.”

The Gaels never trailed on the night and recorded 20 steals as a team. They also held a 42-32 edge in rebounds and limited the Broncos (2-18) to just 22 percent shooting from the field.
