FD girls clinch state berth

Dodger bowlers qualify; Anderson returning on boys’ side

LE MARS — The Fort Dodge girls bowling team is headed back to the state tournament.

The Dodgers placed second at a district meet, securing the No. 4 seed in next week’s state competition with a 2,690 for runner-up honors to host Le Mars (3,084) — the top overall seed for the 2A field.

On the boys’ side, sophomore Kaleb Anderson earned his second consecutive individual state spot with a second-place district performance.

Junior Kat Flores fired a 199-171–370 to pace FDSH, while junior Jenna Lee (156-203–359), freshman Alexis Kenney (167-188–355) and junior Leah Sanck (178-177–355) were right behind.

“The girls have been impressive all year, so it was great to see them finish (their goal) of making it to state,” first-year head coach Nick Vinson said. “We told them before the meet that 2,600 should get them in, and they surpassed that.

“It’s great to be gaining this experience, especially with just one senior. We had the balance and depth we needed to get the job done.”

Senior Mackenzie Sharpe (192-149–341) and freshman Lexi Hanson (186-129–315) rounded out the varsity lineup for the Dodgers, who were also the regular season CIML Iowa Conference champions.

Anderson exploded in the second game after starting with a 192. His 279 — which included 11 consecutive strikes at one point — pushed him back into the qualifying territory, as he did a year ago as a freshman.

“Kaleb just caught fire,” Vinson said. “He got into that at-large area with the 279, which was outstanding.

“The boys didn’t perform poorly overall — they just didn’t quite do enough. We knew we needed anywhere from a 3,020 to a 3,100, and we finished at 2,905. It wasn’t bad … it just didn’t meet state-qualfiying standards.”

After Anderson’s 471, sophomore Brady Graves (190-190–380) and freshman Jayden Ray (190-181–371) were the other FDSH leaders.

Both Dodger squads placed third in the CIML Iowa Conference tournament competition on Thursday.

On the boys’ side, Graves (259-204–463) was sixth individually and Anderson (249-164–413) placed 12th. In the girls competition, Flores (201-168–369) was sixth and Sanck (178-177–365) was eighth.

Waukee was the girls team champ, with Marshalltown claiming top boys honors.

State bowling is Tuesday in Waterloo.
