Dodgers lose to Dragons

JOHNSTON — The Fort Dodge boys couldn’t overcome a slow start, as they fell to Johnston 54-43 on Thursday night.

The Dodgers (4-11 overall) struggled in the opening half, being outscored 31-14 by half. Fort Dodge did turn things around in the second half outscoring the Dragons 29-23.

This was the first game in nearly two weeks for the Dodgers, who defeated Urbandale 46-39 on Jan. 12.

“The first half was slow and not the energy we wanted coming off of the layoff,” said Fort Dodge head coach Tom Daniel. “There is no excuse for it.

“We have to come out with more energy.”

Johnston’s (10-4) Max Roquet had a big night for the Dragons. The 6-5 post player gave the Dodgers fits all game long, scoring 21 points.

“If we’re going to be a low scoring team, we have to play better defense,” Daniel said. “Roquet just out-worked us and their team out-worked us.

“We just let them have their way down low.”

Fort Dodge trimmed the 17-point deficit to 12 at the end of the third quarter, after out-scoring the Dragons 15-10.

“We did a good job in the third quarter to get back in the game and make it competitive,” Daniel said. “We can’t dig ourselves into a big hole like that.”

Tysen Kershaw led the Dodgers with 17 points and Jordan Jackson reached double digits with 11.

“Kershaw stepped up his game,” Daniel said. “He had a nice night, but we have to get scoring from other guys. They beat us to loose balls and we gave up too many easy looks.

“We have got to respond if we want to get the win (against Southeast Polk). We just have to have more energy to start the game.”

The Dodgers are back in action tonight when they host Southeast Polk. Girls action begins at 6:15 p.m. with the boys to follow at approximately 7:45 p.m.
