Triton men struggle contest with Wildcats

The Iowa Central men were unable to overcome cold shooting and 17 turnovers here Friday night, falling to North Dakota Science in the Great Western Shootout, 77-67.

In what was a back-and-forth battle much of the way, the Wildcats used a 20-6 run midway through the second half to score the victory.

Freshman Jesse Moss came off the bench to post a career-high 20 points, including 19 over the final 20 minutes. Both Kemryn Jenkins and Kane Kramer had 13, with Kramer knocking down three 3-pointers.

Mohamed Kone had a game-high 24 for North Dakota Science, with Duoth Gach, Noble Cooper and Jordan Polynice all joining him in double figures.

“We just went cold from the floor and couldn’t get a stop on defense,” ICCC head coach Dennis Pilcher said. “The kids played hard and really never let up, but we made too many mistakes, allowed too many easy buckets and didn’t hit enough of our own open shots to win it.”

Iowa Central (6-4 overall) shot just 7 of 24 from the field in the first half, with the Wildcats making 19 of 33 themselves in the second. The Tritons also allowed 21 points off turnovers and were outscored 32-18 in the paint.

Kone and Cooper both got hot late, scoring 30 of their 38 combined points during the run by North Dakota Science. Gach also had 10 of his 16 in the second half.

“They have some really nice shooters and we didn’t stay in front of them much on the defensive end,” Pilcher said. “But we’ll learn from this and get better. We are starting a very tough part of our schedule here beginning this weekend and we’ll learn a lot about ourselves as a team here before Christmas.”

Iowa Central was scheduled to meet Northeast on Saturday, but the team decided to return to Nebraska due to impending weather. Earlier in the day, NIACC downed Northeast, 105-71.

Next up for the Tritons will be their first ICCAC game of the year at home Wednesday vs. No. 5 Kirkwood. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
