Emmetsburg earns own invite crown

Four individual titles for E-Hawks; Gaels’ Duckett reaches finals

EMMETSBURG — Behind four individual champions, host Emmetsburg was able to just get past Lake Mills for team gold here Saturday at the Bob Roethler Invitational.

The E-Hawks scored 239.5 points, with Lake Mills placing second at 239. Storm Lake was third, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock fourth and Algona fifth.

Ryan Duckett reached the finals for St. Edmond, as the sophomore finished second at 106 pounds. Duckett earned two falls and a major decision to reach the championship match before falling to Jacob Mielke of Pocahontas Area.

“It was a good day for Ryan,” SEHS coach Eugene Carlson said. “He found the shot he is comfortable with and even got the first takedown against Mielke.”

Elly Berry, Clay Kelly, Grant Webster and Nathan Russell were also in action for the Gaels. Kelly earned a win via injury defaut in the consolation third round and placed eighth overall at 132 pounds.

“We are getting matches in and the kids aren’t afraid anymore,” Carlson said.

Emmetsburg’s Sean Brennan won the 113-pound bracket, earning a 2-0 decision over Lake Mills’ Jack Ramaker, Spencer Griffin captured gold at 145 pounds with a decision, with Mason Griffin earning a major decision for first at 152.

Bret Hoyman made it three champions in a row for the E-Hawks, as he earned an overtime victory at 160 over Lake Mills’ Elijah Wagner, 6-4.

Ethan Berven finished second at 132 pounds, while Nick Lowe, Jon Lace II and Levi Aldous were third.

Mielke pinned his way to the 106-pound title, earning three first period falls including a 22-second win in the quarterfinals for Pocahontas Area.

Algona’s Carson Devine picked up a title with an 11-9 decision over West Bend-Mallard’s Conner Fehr at 170 pounds for the Bulldogs.

Cole Lewis placed third for Algona at 195 pounds, while Gavin Meints, Hayden Thompson and Cole Johnson were each fourth.

Eagle Grove’s Joel Mendoza picked up the 220-pound title, as he earned a 3-1 decision over Central Lyon/George-Little Rock’s Jarrett Meyer. Mendoza had two major decisions in earlier rounds.

Mark Dawson was the 145-pound runner-up for the Eagles, earning two falls.

Next action for St. Edmond will be Saturday when they travel to Carroll to take part in the Tiger-Knight Invitational beginning at 10 a.m.
