Tritons secure rugby final four spot
GREENVILLE, N.C. — The fourth-ranked Iowa Central rugby squad advanced to the Div. II national final four with a 25-7 victory over No. 2 Vermont on Sunday in the Mid-Atlantic regional championship.
Kyle Howlett scored two tries for the Tritons, with Mitch Coleman-Hardy adding a try and a penalty. Isaiah Faleuka contributed an eight-man pick off a stolen scrum, and Ezra Ulberg added a conversion.
Vermont did not score until late in the match.
Iowa Central (4-5), which had topped North Dakota State, 42-17, on Saturday to reach the finals against Vermont, now advances to the semifinals in two weeks at Mecklenburg, N.C. The Tritons, an at-large playoff team, were NSCRO national champions last season.
No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater, 12th-rated Queens College and sixth-ranked NC State are the other teams in the final four on Dec. 1. Iowa Central meets the Wolfpack. Winners square off for the title on Dec. 2 just outside of Charlotte.
