Garrigan clips SE girls in opener

ALGONA — Even though the St. Edmond girls dropped their season opener, head coach Steve Neuberger saw a lot of positives out in a 32-31 loss at Bishop Garrigan on Tuesday night.

Neuberger was pleased with the defense against the Golden Bears (1-0), who were a Class 1A state qualifier last season.

“For the first time out, I thought our defense was outstanding against a very good Garrigan team,” Neuberger said. “We had a lot of energy. Our girls played their tails off on defense.”

Senior Erin Flattery led the Gaels with 10 points. Classmate Macey Mason added seven and junior Jocy Timmerman had six points.

“On offense, we did some good things, but there is room for improvement,” Neuberger said. “We couldn’t get our shots to fall when we needed to.

“I thought Erin and Jocy played well round games around the basket for us. Abby (Landwehr), Jacque (Oberg) and Macey did a heck of job on defense. We also had some kids do a good job off the bench.”

The Golden Bears, who won 17 games last season, were led by Katie Noonan and Makenzie Meister, who scored eight points each.

Madison Meister and Emma Fogarty had five points each for Bishop Garrigan.

St. Edmond is back in action next Friday when they travel to face Hampton-Dumont/CAL. Action is slated to start at 6:15 p.m.
