Algona’s Engen, Humboldt’s Gidel earn titles
STORM LAKE — Area runners swept individual championships at the Storm Lake Invitational cross country meet here on Tuesday.
Algona senior Trey Engen and Humboldt junior Bryce Gidel were gold medalists in their respective races. The Wildcat boys also captured the team title, anchored by a runner-up effort from sophomore Queinton Orr.
The Wildcats had 67 points, ahead of Le Mars (75) and MOC-Floyd Valley (98). Fort Dodge was 11th at 268.
Engen crossed in 16:35.80 to pace the field and the Bulldogs. Orr clocked a 16:50.79, with teammates Joe Kunert (9th, 17:42.08) and Eric Wittrock (18:22.30) next in line for HHS.
Eric Crawford (31st, 19:00.07) paced the Dodgers. Jonathon Madden (44th, 19:29.61) followed.
Gidel turned in a 19:19.30 for first place. Isabella Luu (27th, 22:29.53) had the second-best time for the Wildcats, who were fifth.
Harlan earned the girls championship, followed by Spencer and Le Mars. The Dodgers were 13th, led by Alexis Read (62nd, 25:00.33), Piera McBride (66th, 25:17.47) and Isabel Beekman (67th, 25:33.03).
Brayden Potter (49th, 22:30.42) had the low FDSH JV boys mark. Carter Theesfeld (13th, 20:40.50) and Trevor Jacobson (14th, 20:40.76) were the Humboldt JV boys’ top performers.
Allison Hoag (10th, 24:55.11) led the Humboldt JV girls.
