Dodgers fall to No. 2 J-Hawks
URBANDALE — The Fort Dodge baseball team stood toe-to-toe with second-ranked (Class 4A) Urbandale here Wednesday night, but couldn’t complete the upset.
The J-Hawks scored a sweep, 5-1 and 10-9.
After racing out to a 6-0 lead in the nightcap, the Dodgers were unable to hold Urbandale off. The J-Hawks plated five in the third and four in the sixth.
“We came out and competed our tails off there is no doubt about that,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “You look at Urbandale and they have four losses on paper, but two of those are forfeits in games they won because of the pitch-count. That is a team that can do it all and when you have a great team like that down, you have to be ready for when they are going to respond.
“But the thing I liked about our guys is that they answered them each time. We put them in some tough situations, but they didn’t hesitate and were willing to do anything we asked.”
Nate Scherff and Drake Miller each drove in two, Drew Callon scored three times and plated another run, and both Mason Bockoven and Anthony Wagner collected an RBI each.
The J-Hawks took advantage of six walked batters in the game.
“Playing this competition day in and day out is only going to help us get better,” Utley said. “The kids laid it all on the line and I know they feel down right now, but they are going to be able to look back on these two games and use them as learning experiences on how to finish games.”
In the opener, Miller was 3-for-4, with both Callon and Scherff each recording two hits. Shane Halligan drove in the lone run.
Next action for the Dodgers is Thursday when they host Waterloo West at 7:30 p.m.
