Southeast Valley’s Conrad 7th in 2A

PANORA — Delaney Conrad completed her golf season with a medal here on Wednesday, as the Southeast Valley sophomore finished seventh at the Class 2A state meet.

Conrad fired an 83, two strokes better than her first-round score on Tuesday at Lake Panorama National Golf Course. Her 168 total was just eight shots back of runner-up Bailee Frayne from Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.

“My state experience was really great,” Conrad said. “There were definitely highs and lows throughout both days, but it was fun.”

Dike-New Hartford’s Morgan Weber was the clubhouse leader after the first round with a 75, and like Conrad, knocked two shots off her score for a 73 to finish at 4-over for the tournament and claim meet medalist honors.

Van Meter was crowned the team champion, three shots ahead of New Hampton.

Conrad finished with 11 pars on the day, including her final four holes on the back nine and a stretch on the front where she carded five parts in seven holes.

“My short game was strong the entire time,” Conrad said. “I think this will definitely help my future goals. It helps motivate me to achieve more and see where I could be.

“I still want to improve on some things, but overall, I’m very happy with how I played.”

In the first round, Conrad had three birdies, including two on the front nine. She recorded birdies on two holes that were playing over 300 yards.

“Having three birdies the first day was an awesome feeling,” Conrad said. “I felt pretty consistent and steady the second day with just one bad hole.”

Byson, Mayer finish strong in Class 1A

MARSHALLTOWN — Morgan Byson and Riley Mayer both placed inside the Top-25 here Wednesday at the Class 1A girls state golf tournament.

Byson, a senior at Manson Northwest Webster, finished 16th with a 178, and Mayer, a St. Edmond senior, was 21st overall with a 187.

New London’s Casey Noble claimed the individual state title with a 153, with Iowa Valley winning the team title on a tiebreaker over New London after both had 740s.

Bishop Garrigan finished seventh overall as a team with a 778.

Byson rebounded from a 47 on her first nine holes by shooting a 41 on the back nine, which included four pars.

Mayer cut seven shots off her first round score, carding five pars on her second round. She will attend Wartburg College in the fall and compete for the cross country team.

“Riley played two great rounds to end her golf career,” SEHS head coach Kelsey Faiferlick said. “I’m really proud of her, and it’s been a pleasure to coach her these last three years.”

During the first round, weather delays forced the golfers off the course, resulting in play lasting almost eight hours for Mayer.

“The first day was super hot and long, so that was rough,” Mayer said. “Wednesday went a lot better because I was more familiar with the holes, so it was easy to know where to hit and where not to hit. I kept my scorecard from (the first round) so that I could compare it to (the second). That allowed me to have goals and to do better.

“Overall, I’m happy with my experience. I had fun, played some good rounds and met some fun people.”

Isabella Capesius was the highest finisher for the Golden Bears, as she placed 24th overall with a 188. Anna Berke was 31st (191) and Alexis Berte 45th (197). Grace Menke (202), Kelly Baade (212) and Madison Illg (222) followed.

Humboldt duo in action

AMES — Humboldt’s MacKenzie McCartan and Frances Carlson finished up action here Wednesday at the Class 3A state golf meet.

McCartan matched her first round total, placing 48th overall (200). Carlson also finished with the same score, as she placed 49th.

Gilbert’s Britta Snyder shot an even-par two-day total to claim the state individual title with Washington winning the team crown over Creston.
