Gael season comes to an end at regionals

WATERLOO — The St. Edmond girls tennis team saw their season come to an end here in a Class 1A regional meet.

The host, Waterloo Columbus, scored three of the four state bids from the regional.

Anna Sinnott from Columbus bested Danae Nelson of South Hardin in the singles final, while Olivia Fain and Taylor Hogan of Columbus beat teammates Bella Fain and Elysse Trost for the doubles title.

Haley Ledford and Sam Brown both picked up wins in the opening round of singles play, as did the doubles team of Brooklin Border and Jessica Deal.

“I was excited to have three out of our four entries make it to the second round,” SEHS head coach Leah DeBaun said. “The girls had a great day of playing.”

Ledford bested South Hardin’s Meghan VanDePol in a match that went three sets and took almost three hours to complete. Ledford, a senior, won 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. In the second, she fell to Sinnott, 6-2, 6-0.

Brown, also a senior, bested Grace Hoffman from Webster City, 6-1, 6-2. She was ousted by Iowa Falls-Alden’s Blanca Canizares in straight sets.

Border and Deal also downed a team from Webster City in the first, 6-4, 6-0, before falling to Faith Hinz and Anna Di Nardo of Iowa Falls-Alden.

Molly Lennon and Jacque Oberg lost to Fain and Trost in their only match of the day.

Border, Brown, Olivia Carlson, Deal, Katalyn Finnegan, Ledford and Madison Nemmers were all seniors for the Gaels this year.

The 1A state meet is May 30-31 in Waterloo at Byrnes Park.
