North Union hopes to keep dream alive

DES MOINES –North Union will once again be the underdog in their Class 2A semifinal matchup, but that suits the Warriors just fine.

North Union (22-2 overall) will meet sixth-ranked Cascade (23-3) inside Wells Fargo Arena. Tip is set for 11:45 a.m.

The 10th-ranked Warriors have knocked off fourth-rated Western Christian (regional final) and No. 3 Panorama (state quarterfinal) in their last two contests to reach this point.

In their quarterfinal against Panorama, Chloe Lofstrom hit a free throw with 17 seconds left to give the Warriors a 47-46 victory. Lofstrom led North Union with 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Samantha Hagedorn had 13 points.

Cascade knocked off Dike-New Hartford 61-44 in their opening round contest.

Nicole McDermott led Cascade with 20 points. She was 7-for-10 shooting and was 6 of 7 from the line. She also pulled down eight rebounds.

Rachel Trumm had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Abbie Ruggeberg had 11 points.

Cascade was 20-for-27 from the free throw line.

Entering the tournament, Lofstrom is the leading scorer for the Warriors at 17 points per contest.

Hagedorn (14.9) and Reese (14.6) are also key threats.

Seniors Kate Anderson (7.2) and Breanna Anderson (7.5) round out the starting rotation.

McDermott (13.8) and Ruggeberg (12.7) are the top offensive threats for Cascade. Anne Ryan (11.3) is also averaging double digits.
