Flattery tosses one-hitter

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — David Flattery helped the No. 11 Augustana baseball team improve to 16-1 here Thursday, tossing eight innings of one-hit ball against Minnesota Crookston.

Behind Flattery’s 13 strikeouts, the Vikings scored a 6-0 victory. Augustana (16-1 overall, 5-1 in NSIC) also took the first contest, 5-4, at Karras Park.

Flattery, a former St. Edmond and Iowa Central standout, transferred to Augustana after playing for Nebraska Omaha. He moved to 3-1 on the year with 34 strikeouts in 24 innings with just 12 walks and six earned runs issued.

“Everything was working for me,” Flattery said in a post-game interview with GoAugie.com. “I was just happy to get out and play some ball.

“The defense was good behind me; it was a good day.”

Flattery’s 13 strikeouts are tied for fifth-most in school history, as our his six strikeouts looking.

“I probably haven’t struck out 13 guys since back in high school,” he said. “I had a couple good outings this summer, but never 13 strikeouts.”

“I love it here,” he said. “I’m in the Master’s program and everyone has welcomed me with open arms. I’m really enjoying my time here.”

The right-hander also had an eight-strikeout performance in a win over Missouri S&T and recorded seven strikeouts in just four innings vs. Northern State earlier this year.

Augustana and Minnesota Crookston play another doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
