Underclassmen all over all-NCC team

Messenger file photo Taylor McKinney of Webster City was a first team all-North Central Conference selection.

There is a youth movement in the North Central Conference on the girls side, and it showed when the all-league teams were announced recently.

Four sophomores, one junior and one senior made the first team, with three of those 10th-graders securing unanimous all-NCC status.

Algona’s pair of Aliyah Buscher and Abbey Holmes were honored, along with Clear Lake’s Sara Faber. The Lions won the conference, going a perfect 14-0, with the Bulldogs placing second at 11-3.

Webster City’s Taylor McKinney, another sophomore like Buscher, Holmes and Faber, along with Katie Meyer of Iowa Falls-Alden and Jordyn Barragy from Clear Lake rounded out the first team.

Holmes led the conference in scoring, averaging almost 18 points per game. She hit a league-high 49 three-pointers, dished out 2.6 assists per game and was second in field goal percentage at 51.9.

Buscher scored 11.5 points, was second in free throw percentage at 79.2, second in steals at 3.8 and fifth in assists with three.

McKinney averaged just under 13 points per game.

Humboldt’s Sydney Lane and Webster City’s Cassidy Nerland were on the second, with St. Edmond’s Livi Huss, Algona’s Nicole Smidt and Clarion-Goldfield/Dows’ Courtney Harle and Raven Kinnetz securing third team honors.

Lane, Nerland and Huss are seniors, with Smidt a junior, Harle a sophomore and Kinnetz a freshman.

Nerland, who set a Webster City 5-on-5 rebound record, paced the NCC at almost 12 boards per game. Lane led the conference in blocked shots with 25.

Of the 18 players named all-NCC, 12 are underclassmen and expected back next season.
