Triton men drub DMACC

The Iowa Central men assured themselves of another home game next week, besting Des Moines Area here Wednesday night, 98-79.

Tray Croft scored 34 points, Dallas Bailey had 25 and Royshawn Webb 16 for the Tritons, who clinched the No. 4 seed in next week’s ICCAC tournament.

In doing so, Iowa Central (19-10 overall, 5-6 in league) will host either Ellsworth — who they play Saturday in Iowa Falls — or these same Bears (17-11, 3-8).

Croft, one of two sophomores on the active roster with Robert Hawkins, poured in 20 of his 34 in the opening half as the Tritons raced out to a 50-44 lead. That helped match Wali Parks, who had 18 to lead DMACC early, but finished with just 26.

Bailey found his stroke in the second half, scoring 15, including a stretch where he accounted for 11 consecutive Iowa Central points. The freshman also had six rebounds and four assists.

“Tray did what Tray has done all year,” ICCC head coach Dennis Pilcher said. “He just continues to be an incredible offensive threat. Dallas stepped up and had some nice buckets for us and we played much better team defense in the second half.”

Webb, another freshman, added eight rebounds, but it was his defensive effort on Parks that impressed Pilcher.

“Royshawn is the unsung hero of our team,” Pilcher said. “We asked him to stay in front of Parks in the second half and force him to drive. He did that, and it really hampered their offense.”

Three other DMACC players reached double figures, but it was not enough to secure the season sweep. The Bears won in Boone earlier this year, 90-75.

Croft continues to add to his career scoring record, as he has 728 points this season. He is averaging 27 per game, just behind Brian Fobbs from Genesee, who sits at 27.1.

Iowa Central, which went 13-4 at Hodges Fieldhouse this season, takes on Ellsworth (15-13, 4-7) Saturday at 3 p.m. The Panthers upset second-ranked Kirkwood (22-5, 10-1) last night, 81-76 in overtime.
