ALGONA — When they needed to get a key bucket or a tough stop, the ninth-ranked (Class 1A) Bishop Garrigan boys delivered.

Despite a roster without a single senior player on it, the Golden Bears (19-4 overall) were able to show some postseason savvy, pulling out a 73-66 victory over St. Edmond here Tuesday night.

Bishop Garrigan advances to a district final on Thursday at Clarion vs. West Fork, which prevailed over Mason City Newman in a double-overtime thriller prior to the start of this game.

T.J. Schnurr and John Joyce each scored 19 to lead the Golden Bears, with Angelo Winkel adding 16 and 12 rebounds.

Andrew Gibb led the Gaels (12-11) with 30 points, as seniors Will Woodruff and Sean Flaherty combined for 24 points and 17 rebounds.

“We just needed a couple more bounces to go our way,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “Credit Garrigan, because they were able to come up with a few more key plays down the stretch that was the difference.”

Clinging to a late lead in the fourth, the Golden Bears sank 12 shots from the free throw line to preserve the victory. Schnurr hit all four of his around a three-pointer, with Joyce adding three.

Down by five late, Jackson Kochendorfer sank a triple off an offensive rebound by Woodruff, making it a two-point contest. Garrigan, though, was able to control the final minute of action with several key rebounds.

“We just couldn’t quite it over the hump,” Kochendorfer said. “It was a great game and we had our chances. It’s always tough when you come out on the losing end of a close one like this. Our kids played their tails off and did everything we asked of them.”

The contest was the final one for Woodruff, Flaherty and Isaac Lursen. Woodruff recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 boards. He also had three blocks. Flaherty finished with 11 and seven, giving him 13 games this year with 10-plus points.

Cade Winkel was the fourth Garrigan player in double figures, scoring 12. Schnurr added five rebounds and both Cade Winkel and Angelo Winkel had two blocks each.

“I thought we did a good job against their size inside,” Kochendorfer said. “I just want to give a lot of credit to our seniors. They came to practice every single day and made it fun. They pushed the other kids and really got everything they could from themselves.”
