Dodgers travel to Johnston

Winner faces Des Moines North in 4A substate finals

JOHNSTON — For the third time this season, the Fort Dodge boys will face seventh-ranked Johnston.

This time, a berth in the Class 4A substate finals is on the line.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. inside the Johnston High School gym.

The Dodgers (14-8 overall) lost both games during the regular season, but had the Dragons on the ropes in Johnston. In the first meeting, Fort Dodge had an 18-17 lead at halftime against then-No. 3 Johnston (18-3), before losing 51-47.

Senior Malcolm Clayton led the Dodgers with 20 points on 8 of 18 shooting, including four three-pointers.

Bo Sandquist had 14 points and Peyton Williams also reached double digits with 12.

It was a different story in the Dodger gym, as the Dragons picked up a 63-42 victory. Fort Dodge only trailed 29-26 at halftime, but Johnston outscored Fort Dodge 34-16 in the second half.

Boston Grimes had 25, including five three pointers and Camden Vander Zwaag had 13 for the Dragons.

Clayton once again paced the Dodgers with 15 and senior Trey Mosley had 11 points.

The Dodgers are coming off a 59-47 victory over Des Moines East in their Class 4A substate quarterfinal. Clayton enters the contest, third on Fort Dodge’s all-time scoring list with 1,060 points.

He passed Mitch Eslick (1,057). Clayton is behind second place Wade Lookingbill (1,270) and leader Thomas Clark (1,309).

Clayton is pacing the Dodgers at 17.7 points per contest. Next in line is Jordan Jackson (.5), Mosley (8.6), Jace Peterson (4.8) and Tysen Kershaw (4.7).

Johnston has four players averaging double figures. Vander Zwaag (14.6), Grimes (14.4), Peyton Williams (12.6) and Sandquist (10.5) are the Dragons leading scorers.

The winner of Friday’s game will face Des Moines North on Tuesday in the substate finals.
