The 10th-ranked (Class 2A) Webster City wrestling team swept St. Edmond and Humboldt here Tuesday night, clinching the runner-up title in the North Central Conference.

The Lynx earned a 78-3 victory over the Gaels, following that up with a 42-29 triumph over the 16th-rated (2A) Wildcats inside the SEHS gym.

After falling to No. 2 (2A) Clarion-Goldfield/Dows in the league opener, Webster City went unbeaten in NCC action.

The Lynx will get their shot at revenge this coming Saturday in Humboldt at the NCC Tournament.

Going a perfect 2-0 for Webster City were Chase Rattenborg, second-ranked Drake Doolittle, Luke Rohmiller, Harrison Hayes, No. 7 Zane Williams, Hunter Collicott, sixth-ranked Caleb Olson, No. 6 James Cherry and top-rated Cooper Lawson.

“It was a good way to start the week off,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said. “We were able to get some confidence going (with the win over Humboldt).

“Now, we’ll focus on the little things and just keep improving and looking to score points by staying in good positions.”

Both of Rattenborg’s wins came via pin, with Olson also picking up a pair of falls. Doolittle, Rohmiller and Collicott each had a pin.

Lawson scored a win in one of the featured bouts, as he downed Humboldt’s Justin Jones, 6-2, to open that dual. The two are likely to be part of a marquee bracket this Saturday alongside Clarion-Goldfield/Dows’ Spencer Trenary and Algona’s Dominick Etherington. Trenary is ranked fifth in 2A and Etherington is one spot ahead.

“Cooper is a focused wrestler right now,” Hisler said. “He knows what to do and just stays in really good positions all the time.”

The Gaels honored their seniors, which include Jake Szalat and Ty Smith. Noah Carlson, a sophomore, went 2-0, with freshman Ryan Duckett earning the other win for SEHS on the night.

Carlson picked up a second period fall over Humboldt’s Jordan Jensen in a match he trailed 6-2.

“Noah saw that by making 126 pounds, he can have some success,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “I think he understands now why we have been pushing for him to drop down (from 132).”

Duckett also recorded a fall for St. Edmond.

“Ryan had a good second match,” Szalat said. “This conference can be very tough at certain weights, and when you have to wrestle up, it can be a bear.”

Scoring two wins for the Wildcats were Cole Nelson, Zach Kollmorgen, Timmy Larson and No. 9 Joey Busse. Nelson and Kollmorgen each had technical falls, with Busse and Larson earning a pin each.

The NCC meet begins at 10 a.m.
