Tritons lose in Kansas

HUTCHINSON, Kan — The Iowa Central football struggled to keep up with 20th-ranked Hutchinson on Saturday in Kansas.

The Tritons (0-6 overall) suffered a 42-14 setback.

“We tried to make them one demisonal, but they ran the ball better than we wanted them to,” Twait said. “They had a bunch of guys that made plays and we didn’t tackle well and they had a lot to do with that.”

The Tritons were tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter after 68-yard touchdown pass from BJ Phillips to Chris McLeod

Iowa Central’s other touchdown came on a 16-yard scoring strike from Phillips to Chris McLeod.

With Hutchinson leading 28-14, Iowa Central appeared to scoop up a fumble and return it for a touchdown, but the play was ruled an incomplete pass.

Hutchinson rushed the ball 46 times for 238 yards.

Phillips finished the day 10-for-18 for 183 yards. He rushed for 118 yards from scrimmage, but ended with 63 net yards.

“Offensively we thwarted our own drives with penalties,” Twait said. “Our effort was really good, but they made too many big plays.

” They had a 52-yard touchdown early in the third and a 58-yard touchdown late in the third. We shot ourselves in the foot offensively with too many penalties.”

The Tritons are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Kansas to face Fort Scott. Action begins at 1 p.m.
