Tritons come up short in overtime

IOWA FALLS — For the second straight week, the Iowa Central football team was dealt a tough loss, falling to rival Ellsworth 35-28 in overtime here Saturday.

The Panthers (2-1 overall, 1-0 in ICCAC) sealed the win when Elijah Jones picked off his second pass of the day in the extra session following a Paris Chambers touchdown pass to Isaiah Thomas.

“Our kids played their tails off,” ICCC head coach Kevin Twait said. “We just gave up too many explosive plays and couldn’t get off the field on defense. That was really our biggest issue, but we have a tremendous effort and left it all out there.”

Last Saturday, the Tritons (0-3, 0-1) fell to No. 14 Dodge City, 28-20, at Dodger Stadium.

BJ Phillips threw two touchdown passes to Chris McLeod and Mikal Baker, while Zach Parker hit Jaleen James for a score in relief of Phillips. Justin Daubaris had the other Iowa Central score.

“Phillips went out with an injury and Parker came in and played well for us,” Twait said. “We’ve got to put the pedal to the medal and not feel sorry for ourselves because nobody on our schedule is going to feel sorry for us being 0-3.”

Chambers, a sophomore who lifted Ellsworth to a win last year over the Tritons, also threw a touchdown to Ben Rooney early in the fourth and hit Thomas with a TD strike to tie it at 14-all in the second.
