Ayala in finals at Fargo

FARGO, N.D. — Drake Ayala is already making a name for himself on the nation’s biggest youth wrestling stage.

Fort Dodge Senior High’s freshman-to-be scored a 10-0 major decision over Tommy Curran of Warrenville (Ill.) in the Cadet men’s freestyle semifinals at 88 pounds on Sunday, advancing to the championship round of the U.S. Marine Corps Cadet and Junior Nationals.

Ayala, who has already secured All-American status, will face Chance Lamer of Corvallis (Ore.) in the finals at 1:30 p.m. here on Monday. Lamer advanced with a 12-0 win over Brandon O’Brien of Cedar Rapids in the other semifinal.

Ayala defeated Cody Thompson of Loveland (Colo.) by a 10-0 count in the quarterfinals to secure All-American status. He’s 4-0 here so far this week.

Last month, Ayala went a perfect 8-0 in York, Pa. at 88 pounds to secure a Cadet Freestyle National Duals All-Tournament team spot. He had two pins, three technical falls, and advanced twice via forfeit, while also going 6-1 in Greco competition.
