SE baseball team tops North Union

The St. Edmond baseball team struck first here Tuesday night against North Union and never looked back, earning a 10-2 victory at Rogers Park.

Seniors Connor Allison and Sam Dougall each drove in three runs on four hits, while eighth-grader Cael Kolacia had two hits and two RBI for the Gaels (7-8 overall).

After plating three runs in the first and another in the second, St. Edmond sent 11 batters to the plate in the third, scoring six runs to improve to 3-2 over the last five games.

“We’re doing a better job of working the count and hitting our pitches,” SEHS head coach Joe Shanks said. “They aren’t trying to do too much at the plate. We were able to string things together, move runners and support our pitchers.”

By the end of the third, Cole and Connor Allison had scored five runs, stolen three bases and driven in three runs from the top of the order.

Dougall added a big two-RBI single as part of that scoring spree, while Jack McEvoy had an RBI double.

“Sam had a good night and the Allison boys just continue to hit the ball well,” Shanks said. “We’re still leaving too much out there, but we are 15 games in and just a game below .500, so we’re moving in the right direction.”

McEvoy went three-plus innings on the mound, striking out three and allowing just two hits. Jackson Kochendorfer finished it out, recording a pair of strikeouts, including one to end the game with two runners on.

“Jack just needs to get stronger and more consistent,” Shanks said. “He has the stuff to be a really good pitcher. Jackson came on and threw strikes and did a nice job of letting the defense make plays behind him.

“We’ve had games where our pitchers did that and the defense let them down, but (Tuesday night) we made plays.”

For the Warriors (6-7), Trent Pedersen was 2-for-4 with a stolen base, while Jared Larson and Noah Morphew each drove in a run.

St. Edmond will conclude its first run through the North Central Conference Wednesday night when they travel to Hampton-Dumont.

In the junior varsity contest, the Gaels won, 6-1. Nick Bennett was 2-for-2 with four RBI and two triples.
