Wildcats win 4A state title

MARSHALLTOWN — The last time the Humboldt girls captured a state golf championship, no one on the team was even born yet.

That all changed here Wednesday afternoon, as the Wildcats fired a 365 to claim the Class 4A crown over Dubuque Wahlert by nine strokes at Elmwood Country Club.

Humboldt finished with a two-day total of 736, while Wahlert fired a 745. Washington, Grinnell and Nevada rounded out the Top-5.

Brooke Anderson led the Wildcats, as the future St. Catherine University golfer placed third overall. She finished tied for second with Dubuque Wahlert’s Elyse Kalb, but lost out on the tiebreaker.

“It’s a very overwhelming feeling,” Anderson said. “I came out strong (on Tuesday) and shot an 85, which is below my average, so I was really excited about that. I knew I wouldn’t do as well (Wednesday), but I wanted to give it my all.

“I was a little disappointed with my score, but I knew it would get me in the Top-10.”

Washington’s Sarah Nacos claimed the individual title, carding a 78-76–154.

Avery Terwilliger was eighth overall, Halie George finished 13th and France Carlson gave Humboldt all four counters inside the Top-20 with a 16th place finish.

Anderson recalled the last time the Wildcats claimed a state title, which was in 2006 courtesy of the football program.

“Most of our team remembers when that happened,” she said. “That was a great feeling and I feel like a lot of us felt that again (Wednesday).”

Humboldt used strong second day scores from all four counters, rallying back on the final nine holes to get past Wahlert. They previously qualified for state in 2013 and ’15, with this marking the third state title in program history.

“We had a great amount of support the last four years,” Anderson said. “When you think of golf, you don’t really think of a lot of supporters, but that last few tournaments we played in we had around 30-to-40 people out watching us.

“I remember looking back and I had 20 people just from Humboldt watching me and Avery was on the hold behind me and she had about 20 more watching her. That support was just incredible.”

Terwilliger, who will play basketball for Wartburg College next year, fired a 93-89–182, George had 94-93–187 and Carlson 99-91–190. Olivia Birdsell had a 102-107–209.

“It’s a feeling I can’t really describe,” Terwilliger said. “A dream come true.

“I knew we didn’t have to do anything awesome (to win state), we just had to play our game.”

Terwilliger, George and Carlson knocked 13 strokes off their first round scores.

Greene County’s Rachael Danielson carded a 94 to go along with her 88, placing sixth overall.

Emmetsburg cut five strokes off its first round total, finishing with a 745 to place second in 2A by a single shot over Alta/Aurelia. Treynor claimed team honors with a 698.

Allison Freeman paced the E-Hawks, finsihing eighth overall with matching 86s. Sarah Pugh was 18th (89-96–185), Parker Traub finished with 193 (99-94) and Molly McCain 196 (102-94).

In 1A, Bishop Garrigan’s Isabella Capesius placed 14th overall, shooting 91-97–188.

Cedar Falls won in 5A, while Dubuque Senior’s Maddie Hawkins was medalist with a 141 (74-67). Atlantic claimed the team title in 3A and Clear Lake’s Emily Snelling picked up her third state title (70-71–141). Annika Patton of Alta/Aurelia won the 2A title (77-77–154) and Samantha Moore of West Monana claimed the 1A crown (76-75–151).

Akron-Westfield was the 1A team champion.
