St. Edmond has selected Steve Neuberger to be its new activities director, school president Mary Gibb confirmed on Friday.

Neuberger, currently the seventh and eighth grade activities director, head varsity boys basketball coach and varsity boys golf coach in the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union school district, will officially start at St. Edmond on July 1. In addition to the role of activities director, the 42-year-old Neuberger will also serve as an associate principal at St. Edmond.

Neuberger is replacing Joe Shanks, who has held the position since 1996.

”I’m really excited to get started,” said Neuberger, a native of Davenport who now lives in Remsen — a town 110 miles northwest of Fort Dodge. ”This is a wonderful opportunity to get back into Catholic education. I’m looking forward to being a part of the St. Edmond tradition, which is well known here in northwest Iowa.”

Neuberger graduated from Davenport Assumption High School in 1993 and St. Ambrose University in 1998, and is currently working on obtaining his Master’s degree in education from Morningside College in Sioux City. He served as activities director of Remsen-Union Community School District for seven years before the consolidation with MMC.

”Steve understands the importance of quality leadership in order for extracurricular programs to achieve at the highest levels possible,” Gibb said in a statement. ”Steve has coached for the last 20 years in numerous capacities. His references spoke highly of his organization skills, consistency, positive attitude, strong moral and ethical standards, his visibility at events, and his energy and passion for a top-notch athletic program.”

When the opportunity presented itself through the interview process, Neuberger quickly identified St. Edmond as a ”wonderful school” to start a new chapter in his educational career.

”I was looking for a new challenge, and my wife is originally from central Iowa, so this was a chance to get our kids and family closer to their grandparents,” Neuberger said. ”Everyone is excited about the move. At the stage in my career, after over 20 years of coaching basketball, baseball and golf, I’m really looking forward to taking on a (full-time) administrative role.”

Neuberger played baseball and basketball as a prep, and was a second baseman on Assumption’s 1992 and ’93 state championship teams. His basketball coach at Assumption, Randy Norton, is now the head women’s coach at the University of Alabama Birmingham.

After graduating from Assumption and then St. Ambrose, he served as a K-8 physical education teacher and 6-8 athletic director for eight years at St. Paul the Apostle School in Davenport.

Neuberger and his wife, Toni, have four children: Grace (entering sixth grade), Alli (second grade), Cooper (kindergarten) and Luke (three years old).
