Murman qualifies for state

Beth Murman will make a return to the state tennis tournament, as the Fort Dodge junior earned a runner-up title here Thursday.

Murman lost in the Class 2A, Region 1 singles finals to Boone’s Davi Patterson at Dodger courts.

Patterson, who finished second last year at state to Des Moines Roosevelt’s Alex Kozlowski, scored a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Murman, who won state doubles with Jaci Cochrane last season.

“Beth got the No. 2 seed and played two quick matches to make the finals,” FDSH head coach Martha Stover said. “We expected her to play Davi again and I thought she really had a good match with her.

“(Patterson) is a great player, but that is the kind of player Beth is going to see at state so it was great for her to get the experience now.”

In the doubles championship match, Urbandale’s Abby Reis and Jackie Kaiser scored a 6-3, 6-0 victory over teammates Mylea Cole and Brooke Dannenfeldt.

Gretta Leigh and Kathryn Cochrane went 2-1 and placed third in the doubles draw. They lost to Cole and Dannenfeldt and will be the alternate for state.

“I knew coming in about Abby and Jackie, but Urbandale put Mylea and Brooke together late,” Stover said. “They were very aggressive players at the net and that took Gretta and Kathryn some time to get used to.”

Noelle Barber went 1-1 in singles, while Cate Hatton and Anna Bruen also went 1-1 in doubles.

“It was a good day for us overall,” Stover said. “We had some tough matchups, but the girls played very well.”

Bruen, Hatton and Leigh were all playing their final matches as Dodgers.

The 2A state tennis tournament takes place June 1-2 in Ankeny at the Ankeny Tennis Complex at the Prairie Ridge Sports Complex.
