DES MOINES — Pocahontas Area will need to make more room in its high school trophy case, as senior Kenzie Sullivan is bringing more hardware home.

Sullivan, a senior, won the Class 2A discus here Friday at the state track and field meet with a throw of 133-1. The victory marked the first title in seven tries for the future Wayne State College thrower.

“This means a lot,” Sullivan said. “I knew that I had gotten into the finals with my second throw, so my coaches were telling me to not hold back and get after it on my next one and that is what I did.”

On Thursday, Sullivan claimed a runner-up medal in the shot put. She was also second in the discus last year and won silver at the Drake Relays earlier this spring in the discus.

Pella Christian’s Elizabeth Van Manen was second with a best of 132-2 on her first attempt, while North Fayette Valley’s Megan Niewoehner was third.

Sullivan fouled her first throw but came right back with her winning performance on her second attempt. She also had a throw of 131-5 on her third attempt.

“The field of throwers was pretty tight in distances and I knew that any one of them could win, so I thought, ‘why not me,'” Sullivan said. “It means everything to me to know that my thousands of practice throws has finally paid off.

“I would not want to end my high school throwing career any other way.”

Sullivan was also a member of the girls basketball team that won state titles each of the past two seasons.

“I was so happy to have such amazing family, coaches and friends to share this experience with me,” Sullivan said.

Pocahontas Area also claimed another medal, as the 4×200-meter relay was sixth in 1:47.94. Ashlyn Weidauer, Faith Meyer, Jessica Sump and Kaylee Shivers comprised the unit.

Cascade’s quartet had the fastest prelim time at 1:44.65.

Meyer advanced to the 100-meter hurdle finals after posting the second-quickest qualifying time at 15.52. Cascade’s Lisa Tucker enters as the No. 1 seed (15.45).

The Indian 4×100 relay of Weidauer, Elle Ruffridge, Grace Meyer and Shivers placed 10th in the prelims in 51.38.

Through 10 events scored, Pocahontas Area sits third in the team standings with 22 points. Cascade leads with 27 and Mid-Prairie is second with 26.
