Gibb qualifies for state golf

The St. Edmond boys golf team had their run of state tournament appearances come to an end here Thursday, placing third by a single stroke at a Class 1A district meet.

Boyden-Hull shot a 326 and North Union a 333 to claim the team spots at Lakeside Golf Course. The Gaels finished with a 334, but did advance Andrew Gibb to the state meet.

Gibb shot a 78 to place fourth overall. North Union’s Nathan Eaton won a playoff over Boyden-Hull’s Davis Van Roeckel for medalist honors after both shot 75s.

“Andrew had a great day,” SEHS head coach Dan Streit said. “We just left too many shots out there. We had some chances, but it just wasn’t meant to be.”

St. Edmond was the 2A runner-up a year ago, but graduated four starters from that unit. Gibb and Charlie Doyle, who finished second at state last year, were the only returning players with varsity experience.

Doyle shot an 80, while Hunter McCarville added an 87. Tommy Lennon and Sean Flaherty each had 89s and Brant Reiling carded a 90.

“Charlie has been a rock for us for four years,” Streit said. “We are going to miss him along with seniors Hunter McCarville and Brant Reiling.

“We asked those guys to step up and they did that.”

Also for the Warriors, Parker Oleson fired a 76 to place third.

Despite a series of storms leaving damage to the area, the crew at Lakeside was able to get the course ready for competition.

“I just want to give a special thank you to Chad Graff and his staff for all the work they put in,” Streit said. “I had many players and coaches tell me they couldn’t believe how good of condition the course was in considering what came through here.”

The 1A state meet takes place next Friday and Saturday in Marshalltown.
