Gibb, area golfers ready for state

LIVERMORE — The Webster City boys are back at Spring Valley Golf Course seeking a three-peat in Class 3A.

The Lynx shot a 314 at districts to advance. Last season, they won gold with a 614, 11 strokes ahead of West Delaware.

Completing the 3A field will be Williamsburg, Mount Pleasant, MOC-Floyd Valley, Atlantic, Adel-ADM, Norwalk, Benton and Central DeWitt.

Webster City features seniors Drew Fielder, Connor Shannon, Bryan Ferrell, James Van Diest and Brian Borkowski, along with sophomore Nathan Ferrell.

Shannon finished in a tie for 17th last season, while Fielder tied for 40th overall. Nathan Ferrell was 47th and Bryan Ferrell was an alternate.

Fielder was also on the championship team in 2015 and a member of the third place team the year before.

Mount Vernon finished fourth at state a year ago, with Atlantic, Williamsburg and MOC-Floyd Valley placing fifth, sixth and seventh.

The last program to win three straight state titles was Ballard, which finished on top from 2007-10.

St. Edmond was unable to continue its streak of state appearances as a team, but sophomore Andrew Gibb grabbed an individual berth. Gibb will play in Marshalltown at the American Legion Golf Course.

Gibb finished fourth at districts after firing a round of 78. He finished in a tie for 35th last year in 2A, shooting rounds of 80 and 84.

Bishop Garrigan, which has won 11 state titles including back-to-back in 2014 and ’15, returns to the 1A field. Led by Logan Capesius, the Golden Bears shot a 333 at districts.

Fellow senior Donnie Berte, James Burns and Andrew Thilges, along with junior Tommy Kollasch and freshman Andrew Arndorfer complete the lineup.

Berte placed eighth in 2015 and 16th in ’14. Capesius, meanwhile, tied for fourth last year as an individual qualifier.

North Union also shot a 333 at districts to qualify, led by Nathan Eaton and Parker Oleson. Eaton, a senior, fired a round of 75, while Oleson, also a senior, shot a 76.

Oleson fired a 72-73–145 a season ago to place second to defending state champion Chris Cooksley of East Buchanan by two shots.

Other 1A teams set to compete include defending champion East Buchanan, Winfield-Mt. Union, Boyden-Hull, Coon Rapids-Bayard, North Mahaska and Grundy Center.

In 2A, East Sac County’s Dylan Scheffler heads to Lakeside Golf Course to compete as an individual qualifier after shooting a 78 at districts.

Like Webster City and East Buchanan, Panorama returns to defend its 2A title.
