Gaels fall to Indians, 6-4

POCAHONTAS — Kenzie Sullivan hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to help the Pocahontas Area softball team to a 6-4 victory over St. Edmond here on Thursday.

Sullivan, a recent state track champion in the discus, belted a long ball with the Indians (2-1 overall) trailing the Gaels (0-3) by a 4-3 count.

St. Edmond plated three runs in the top of the first inning and another in the second. Pocahontas Area knotted the score in the bottom of the first, but trailed from the second until Sullivan’s blast in the fifth.

”We played really well,” SEHS head coach Nick Clark said. ”We hit the ball hard, but after (the first two innings), we just didn’t find the gaps. I was proud of our defense (not committing an error).”

Sydney Nelson had an RBI double for the Gaels. Megan Flattery delivered an RBI single. Audrey Kolacia and Rylee Kinney both stole a pair of bases.

Senior Payton Hjerleid settled down after a difficult start to earn the complete-game win for the Indians.

St. Edmond’s home opener is on Friday against Hampton-Dumont at Rogers Park. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. in the single varsity contest.
