DES MOINES — Car’Maiya Mosley and Shariah Smith will have their final go-round this week at the girls state track and field meet for Fort Dodge.

Mosley competes on Friday morning in the shot put, while Smith runs the 100 prelims on Thursday. Both are also scheduled to be part of the 4×100 relay that qualified and competes on Friday.

For Mosley, this state opportunity will be one that fully allows her to embrace the moment.

“I feel like my job is done,” she said. “I’ve done all I can do. I competed with some of the best.

“I feel sad that my time here is almost up, but one thing is for sure; I will never be forgotten.”

Mosley has the 12th-best overall throw in 4A at 38-5.5. Waukee teammates Kat Moody (47-0.75) and Moe Nealey (44-6.5) lead the field entering state. She will throw in the second flight of the event, which begins at 9 a.m.

“I hope to run faster and have a really good time for our 4×1,” Mosley said. “For the shot put, I hope to get my personal record again and place. I want to have my best throw yet.

“I know I can do better (in the shot put), I just need to get the steps and the rhythm down pat.”

Smith, who has previous state and Drake Relays experience like Mosley, has posted the seventh-fastest 100 time in 4A this spring. She went 12.37 earlier this month.

Kerris Roberts of Waterloo East has the quickest time at 11.82, while Darby Thomas from Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln is right behind at 11.83. Both Roberts and Thomas are just sophomores.

Smith is in the first heat of the 100 that hits Drake Stadium at 12:57 p.m. The future Neosho basketball player will run out of lane two.

Fort Dodge has posted the 22nd-best 4×100 relay time at 50.74 from last month. The same four that ran that relay are set to compete this week.

Joining Smith and Mosley on the 4×100 relay will be sophomore Daphne Alstott and junior Shareece Smith, Shariah’s sister. They are in heat two and lane eight at 12:50 p.m.
