FD’s Bowser moves into tennis semis

CEDAR RAPIDS — Jonny Bowser is once again back in the Class 2A state tennis semifinals, and he’ll face a familiar foe on Saturday.

Bowser scored a pair of straight-set victories here Friday during first and quarterfinal round action at state. He’ll meet Hoff, an unseeded district runner-up, in the semis at 10 a.m. from Veteran’s Memorial Tennis Center.

Last year, Hoff scored a three-set victory over Bowser in the semifinals on his way to a runner-up showing. Hoff was knocked out of Iowa City West’s Jiung Jung, who defeated him in a district final earlier this month.

Bowser had no trouble with his first two matches, besting West Des Moines Dowling’s Donovan Chleborad, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round. The Fort Dodge senior, who earned the No. 2 seed behind Jung, topped Linn-Mar freshman Luke Van Donslear in the quarters, 6-1, 6-3.

“Jonny was very focused (today) from the very first ball that he struck,” said Fort Dodge head coach Jared Feddersen. “He played some very high level tennis to advance to the semifinals.”

Jung, a two-time defending state champion, is on the top side of the semifinals. He scored a 6-4, 6-2 win in the quarters over Pleasant Valley’s Sriram Sugumaran. He’ll face the No. 4 seed, Timothy Ellis of Ames, who knocked out Dowling’s David Lu.

Along with a fourth place showing in singles last year, Bowser won a state title as a sophomore in doubles with Brian Murman and captured the consolation bracket his freshman season with Andrew Stover to finish fifth.

Bowser also won the state co-ed doubles crown with Beth Murman last summer. Murman plays in the state singles tournament next week.

Hoff advanced with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 3 seed Jacob Panjwani of Bettendorf in the quarters.

“The semifinals should be a great rematch from last year’s tournament,” Feddersen said. “These two guys played a tremendous match a year ago and Jonny knows he will have to be at the top of his game to advance to the finals.”
