Tritons split with No. 20 Lakers
The Iowa Central softball team split with Iowa Lakes here Thursday in battle of ICCAC schools.
The 20th-ranked Lakers won the first, 12-1 in six innings, but the Tritons bounced back for a 9-8 win in the nightcap.
Sonya McCormick hit a grand slam as part of a seven-run second inning for Iowa Central (36-17 overall, 15-9 in league), who remained a game ahead of Iowa Lakes (29-14, 14-10) for third in the conference standings.
She finished the game 2-for-4 with five RBI.
“It showed a lot of character to come back and win that second game,” ICCC head coach Rick Sandquist said. “We had a chance to tie the first one, but (Iowa Lakes) made a great play and then came back and took advantage of everything we gave them in the sixth (scoring nine runs).”
Alexis Egan had two hits and scored twice, while also driving in a run. Molly Matthes and Brielle Ulrich each had an RBI.
Lexi Binder earned the win, striking out three over seven innings. She got one of those strikeouts and recorded the final out with runners on first and third in the seventh.
Ashley Hahnbaum and McCormick each had two hits in the first game.
The Tritons conclude the home portion of their season this weekend, hosting fifth-ranked DMACC on Saturday and North Iowa Area on Sunday.
