Williams, Freese win doubles crown

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — The Iowa Central bowling teams kicked off action here Friday at the NJCAA Championships.

The championships take place over two days, concluding on Saturday at the Airport Lanes.

The Tritons lead the five-man team standings with 5,976, giving them a 354-pin lead on Highland and 400-plus lead on Erie.

Logan Williams and Brandon Freese picked up gold in doubles. Freese had a 684 series with games of 214, 181 and 289, while Williams had a 677 (194-269-214).

They held off a pair from Highland for the title.

Drew Hansen and Blake Eddy finished sixth for the Tritons, while Jordan Wandland and Caleb Hala were 15th.

Freese fired a 617 series in singles and claimed third, while Eddy was sixth. Ian Johnson was 13th and Williams 14th.

On the women’s side, Iowa Central is third in the team standings behind two-time defending champion Schenectady and Highland. The Tritons fired a 4,857, while Schenectady sits at 5,475 and Highland at 4,894.

Cass Rose and Aften Minnich finished fifth in doubles with a 1,025, while Miranda Vreeland and Abby Goldsberry were eighth.

Rose rolled 155, 198 and 183 games for a 536 series in singles, placing her 10th. Vreeland was 12th.

Suffolk County was the men’s champion a year ago. Since 1982, only Suffolk, Erie, Vincennes and Schenectady County have won titles.

The Triton men were second and women third last year at nationals.
