The St. Edmond girls basketball squad kicked off postseason play Saturday night with a convincing 68-44 victory over Eagle Grove in a Class 2A, Region 4 contest.

The Gaels (5-18 overall) will now travel to Panora on Tuesday to face sixth-ranked Panorama (20-1) in the quarterfinals. The winner meets either Interstate-35 or Ogden on Friday in a semifinal also in Panora.

Erin Flattery was one of three SEHS players in double figures, scoring a team-high 18. Megan Flattery added 17 and Livi Huss 14. Erin and Megan Flattery combined for 25 points in the second half.

“Erin and Megan really carried us (over the final 16 minutes,” SEHS head coach Scott Messerly said. “In the first, Brea McNeil came off the bench and had six straight points. Her and Livi really had strong games in the first half.

“Our scoring was really spread around, which was great to see.”

It marked the first time all season St. Edmond has scored over 60 points, snapping an eight-game losing streak in the process. The last four of those defeats came to teams ranked, including No. 2 (3A) Pocahontas Area.

“We made shots,” Messerly said. “We’ve struggled all year with that but the girls took advantage of our press and got some easy buckets. We also got to the free throw line (St. Edmond was 10 of 14 there).”

Livi Huss had a double-double, as she also pulled down 11 rebounds, while Hannah Huss added six boards. Megan Flattery dished out five assists.

St. Edmond’s 20 points in the first quarter were the most scored this year, as they led by 13 after eight minutes. The lead expanded to 16 at halftime and 17 after three.

For the Eagles (1-21), sophomore Natalie Vrba had a game-high 21. McKenzie Crail added six.

“Vrba is a real nice player,” Messerly said. “We struggled to defend her inside.”

Panorama has won 10 in a row including five wins by at least 20.
