DES MOINES — It was a tough day for the Fort Dodge bowling teams here Tuesday at the Class 2A state meet.

The Dodger girls placed sixth overall, while the boys finished in eighth.

“In a lot of ways, it was a frustrating day,” FDSH head coach Don Ervin said. “But when we started out this year, the ultimate goal was to get down to state. We did that. And like I told them, we came down, gave it 100 percent and it didn’t work out.

“But we got 150 percent of the fun out of it, so I guess we won in the end.”

Lexi Hemann, a junior, was the top individual finisher for the FDSH girls, as she placed 16th overall with a score of 365 (169-196).

Ottumwa claimed its fourth bowling title with a 3,010. Kaitlyn Moore of Keokuk was the individual winner with a 470 (235-235).

Megan Patrick finished in 22nd for the Dodgers with a 351 (180-171), followed by Leah Sanck in 23rd with a 349 (203-146). Lauren Hade placed tied for 39th (150-148–298), Bayleigh Olsen was 45th (140-143–283) and Ali Paulson finished 49th (115-145–260).

“Lexi had a good performance and it will be nice to have her back next year,” Ervin said. “The senior girls, they really were an anchor for us and helped us each meet.”

Patrick, Olsen and Paulson are all seniors for Ervin. Patrick finished 13th at state a year ago.

Fort Dodge entered with the highest district score, as Hade and Olsen posted the Top-2 individual scores out of districts, as well. They did overtake Pleasant Valley for sixth following Baker’s.

The Dodger boys fired a 2,780, led by Jared Jacobson. The sophomore finished tied for 20th. Jacobson had games of 167 and 235 for a 402 series.

Urbandale picked up the team title with a 3,395 — over 300 pins ahead of Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson. The J-Hawks had the individual winner, as junior Alec Reseland rolled a 535 (279-256).

Seth Hanson was 26th (181-208–389), while Tre Preston finished 34th (226-157–383). Tristan Earnest (168-208–376), Adam Moore (170-184–354) and Ethan Graves (158-132–290) rounded out the Fort Dodge lineup.

Hanson, Earnest and Moore were competing for the final time under Ervin. Hanson was a bronze medalist last year and competed on each of the past three state tournament squads, including the title run in 2015.

“Just like the girls, the seniors for the boys were a staple to what we wanted to do as a program these last four years,” Ervin said. “They are going to be missed.”
