Doyle unanimous all-NCC

Charlie Doyle worked his way up from a role player to a two-year starter for the St. Edmond boys.

And for his drive and determination, the Gael senior was rewarded as one of two unanimous selections to the all-North Central Conference first team.

Doyle averaged over 15 points and five assists per game in league action, helping St. Edmond place third behind Webster City and Clear Lake.

Zach Lester, a junior for the Lions, was the other unanimous choice, while the Lynx had two first team picks in senior Connor Shannon and junior Jordan Tanner.

Doyle finished the year with 70 made three-pointers and was a 44 percent shooter from the field. For his career, he sank 155 triples.

“Charlie getting first team honors was nice to see,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “I think us getting third as a team really helped. You get more respect from the league with a Top-3 finish.”

Andrew Gibb, a sophomore, was named to the second team for St. Edmond, while junior Will Woodruff garnered third team status.

Gibb averaged 16 points a game in NCC play and finished as the top three-pointer shooter in the conference at 48.6 percent. He made 36 of 74 shots and was also the top free throw shooter in the league at 92.5 percent.

“Andrew had a really solid year,” Kochendorfer said. “If you look at his stats, his percentages from the free throw and three-point line were very good.”

Woodruff was limited to 10 games due to a season-ending foot injury, but led the NCC in rebounding (14 per game) and assists (5.2).

“It’s tough to make an all-conference team when you miss four games,” Kochendorfer said. “But it shows the amount of respect the league had for Will to vote him on there despite the injury. We were a totally different team with him gone.”

Shannon topped all conference players in blocked shots with 23 in 14 games and rebounding with 173, while also posting almost 13 points a night.

Tanner averaged 15 points, was fourth in field goal percentage, eighth in steals ninth in assists and 10th in rebounding. The Lynx went back-to-back as conference champions despite graduating all five starters from a season ago.

Algona’s Jackson Helmers and Riley Helmers were named to the second team, along with Clarion-Goldfield/Dows’ Rhett Darland and Sam Urness. Drew Thomas, who will walk-on to the University of Iowa football team in the fall, was also named to the second unit for Humboldt.

Devon Clark from Humboldt, Nick Stein of Algona, Cameron Moen from Webster City and Will Weidemann of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows rounded out the third team.

Webster City went 12-2 to claim the overall title by a game over Clear Lake. St. Edmond was third with Clarion-Goldfield/Dows finishing fourth.
