Snelling, Lions defeat SE girls

CLEAR LAKE –The St. Edmond girls basketball squad had no answer for Clear Lake’s Emily Snelling on Friday night.

Snelling led the No. 7 (3A) Lions (8-1 overall, 5-0 in the North Central Conference) to a 61-20 victory over the Gaels (3-5, 1-4).

The Clear Lake senior had 29 points and gave the Gaels fits all night.

“She (Snelling) is really good,” said St. Edmond head coach Scott Messerly. “She doesn’t shoot a lot of jump shots and she handles the ball really well.

“We had a hard time slowing her down.”

Clear Lake had a solid offensive showing at the top of its lineup, with only four players scored on the night. Jessica Faber checked in with 15, and Jordyn Barragy added 10. Sara Faber was the other scorer for the Lions, recording nine.

“They’re really intense,” Messerly said. “They’re very aggressive and had a lot of steals. They forced us into 43 turnovers.

“They pressed us early and did it the whole way. We didn’t have much trouble brining it up, but we couldn’t keep the ball away from them when we tried to run our offense.”

The Gaels had trouble finding any kind of offensive rhythm, but Megan Flattery was the bright spot.

Flattery had nine points and 11 rebounds for the Gaels.

“Megan had a solid night,” Messerly said. “She played a good game and did a nice job moving over to play point guard for us.

“We can’t behind pretty early, so it was hard to catch up.”

The Gaels are back in action on Tuesday when they host seventh-ranked Newell-Fonda at 6:15 p.m. as part of a girl/boy doubleheader.
