Gael girls snap out of skid

Erin Flattery scored 22 points, including 14 in the first half, as the St. Edmond girls earned their third win of the season here Thursday night.

Behind Flattery’s strong night, the Gaels posted a 52-47 victory over South Hamilton, improving their record to 3-4 on the year. St. Edmond also bested the Hawks last year, 35-28, for its lone regular season victory.

The Gaels jumped out early, building what seemed like a commanding 15-point lead after the first half. Turnovers and shooting woes from the free throw line, though, allowed South Hamilton (0-8) to close the distance.

“We haven’t really worked on our delay for late in games because we haven’t had many leads,” SEHS head coach Scott Messerly admitted. “But I thought the girls really stepped up when we needed them to and took care of the ball.

“Erin had another strong game, as did Hannah Huss and Megan Flattery. We’re still missing a couple of key pieces, but if we can get them back and in a rhythm, the girls will have gained valuable experience.”

Huss had 10 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Megan Flattery added eight, eight boards and three steals. Erin Flattery also grabbed seven rebounds and had four steals.

In the opening 16 minutes, the Gaels forced 15 Hawk turnovers and scored 12 points off those mistakes. They had just four points on 12 second half turnovers.

“We missed a lot of easy looks,” Messerly said. “I think we got a little ahead of ourselves. We played much faster than we wanted to, especially without our usual point guard (Macey Mason).

“But I thought Cambrie (McBride) did a nice job of running the offense and Jacque (Oberg) did too.”

For South Hamilton, Bree Hodnefield had 21 points, while Anna Moss added 11. The Hawks have dropped 13 in a row dating back to last season.

St. Edmond will jump back into North Central Conference play this evening, traveling to face seventh-ranked (Class 3A) Clear Lake (7-1, 4-0). The Gaels are 1-2 in NCC action.
