Triple record for Ruffridge

Messenger photo by Britt Kudla Elle Ruffridge of Pocahotas Area set the Iowa girls high school career three-point record on Friday night.

SIOUX RAPIDS — Elle Ruffridge and Faith Meyer both eclipsed individual milestones as the top-ranked (Class 3A) Pocahontas Area girls basketball team earned its 35th consecutive victory here on Friday.

Not that the Indians’ senior standouts were keeping track.

Ruffridge set a new Iowa high school girls state basketball record for career three-point goals, and Meyer reached the 1,000-point total in PAC’s 88-26 drubbing of Sioux Central.

”Everything comes within the framework of the team, so that when (a personal record) is reached, it’s rarely noticed until someone says something,” Indian head coach Robert Maske said. ”That’s what is so special about this group. They’re very in the moment. They’re playing hard and not letting up.

”Elle had no idea (when she hit her all-time best 353rd triple). Faith didn’t either when she scored her 1,000th point. Our motto has been ‘playing for each other’ all year long. It isn’t about the statistics or the records. They’re out there to compete, to battle, and to take nothing for granted.”

Ruffridge finished with 36 points for Pocahontas Area (8-0), thanks in large part to her nine triples. Payton Hjerleid added 18 points, while Meyer contributed 16.

Grace Meyer, Faith’s twin sister, tallied seven points, nine assists, six rebounds and three steals.

Ruffridge, a Missouri State University recruit, is now averaging 30.4 points per contest. Friday was already the fourth time she’s surpassed the 30-point total in a game this season.

The Indians swished a program-record 18 three-point baskets, which is one shy of the single-game team mark in Iowa.

Sioux Central is now 1-7.
