MARSHALLTOWN — The Fort Dodge girls expanded on their winning streak here on Friday.

The Dodgers (4-1 overall, 1-0 CIC North) captured their third straight victory, cruising to a 52-18 victory over Marshalltown (0-6).

Fort Dodge won their two contests this week by a combined 68 points.

The Dodgers used balanced scoring and a strong effort on defense to prevail for the fourth straight time against the Bobcats.

“We played well as a team,” said FDSH head coach Julius Michalik. “They’re undermanned, but we shot the ball a little better and rebounded well.

“Any time you hold a team to 18 points, you’re doing something well defensively.”

After a lackluster first quarter, the Dodgers started to find their rhythm and outscored the Bobcats 19-2 in the second period and 15-3 in the third.

“We were really playing well after the first quarter,” Michalik said. “We had some nice drives to the basket and were able to do some things and move the ball around.”

Three Dodgers reached double figures, led by junior Shareece Smith’s 13 points. Junior Liza Van Zyl added 12 points, and senior Shariah Smith added 10.

“Liza had some good drives and some strong rebounds,” Michalik said. “She was able to finish around the rim, which was nice to see.

“The (Smith sisters) had a good night on defense, and had some good transition baskets against their zone.”

Michalik also used his bench liberally, which he felt will pay dividends later on.

“Aleah (Sherman) and Olivia (Camamo) got some key minutes,” Micahlik said. “Both scored their first varsity points.”

The Dodgers now face No. 4 Waukee on Tuesday at home, before traveling to No. 9 West Des Moines Dowling on Friday.

“The schedule gets a lot tougher now,” Micahlik said. “We know we have to play our best game to hopefully compete against these two strong programs.”
