Iowa Central faces No. 1 squad

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – Kevin Twait liked what he saw out of his ballclub last week, but Iowa Central is in for an entirely different level of challenge here on Saturday.

The Tritons travel to face top-ranked Garden City (8-0). Kick off is set for 1 p.m. in Garden City.

“The kids played hard last week,” Twait said. “We missed a field goal in the fourth quarter that would have tied it.

“They laid it on the line. We didn’t have a turnover, and blocked two punts. We just couldn’t quite (overcome a 20-7 deficit).”

The Broncos offer a strong running game, led by Tra Minter. The freshman has rushed for 946 yards and nine touchdowns. He averages 118 yards per game and 4.2 per carry.

Dwayne Lawson has three touchdowns out of the backfield.

Quarterback Peyton Huslig has thrown for 703 yards and seven scores. Daniel Davis, Ben Phillips and Jayru Campbell have two scores each.

“Our kids continue to trust each other,” Twait said. “(Garden City) lines up and plays power football. They rely on a tremendous defense and special teams.

“That’s the formula we’ve tried to establish here through the years.”
