Tritons beat Iowa State

AMES – The Iowa Central rugby team picked up a 26-15 victory over Iowa State here Saturday.

Evian Akers had two tries, while Nathan Heath and Darryl Couch each had one. Matt Barker was 3 of 4 on conversion kicks for the Tritons, who also beat Iowa and Northern Iowa earlier this year.

“We struggled a bit in the first half, turning the ball over,” ICCC head coach Brent Nelson said. “But we corrected that and the guys played really hard and tackled well. We finished strong.

“The conditions were a little sloppy because of the rain, which made the ball wet and the ground wet. We have tremendous athleticism and speed, and that kind of took over throughout the match.”

The Tritons also claimed the B side, 36-0, over the Cyclones.

“Our B side really pushes the A side in practice,” Nelson said. “They controlled the ball and did a good job of rucking.”

Iowa Central returns to action next Saturday against the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.

The Tritons will play their home opener on Saturday, Oct. 1, vs. WIT.
