Teams begin district play
It’s a new season starting tonight, as area football teams dive head-first into district play.
Squads had two weeks to round into shape, and now, it’s time to tighten up and focus for the next seven weeks of action. Every game is crucial under the new, condensed playoff format; programs must be ready for the immediate grind.
There are a couple of big matchups in the area this evening. Unbeaten and eighth-ranked Webster City will travel to undefeated Gilbert. West Bend-Mallard and Kingsley-Pierson will also put their unblemished records on the line.
South Central Calhoun picked up their first victory last week, and Southeast Valley lost for the first time. They’ll face off tonight in Gowrie.
Meanwhile, Humboldt travels to Spencer.
No. 8 Webster City (2-0, 0-0) at Gilbert (2-0, 0-0)
Webster City has put together two solid campaigns, outscoring their opponents 97-28. Last week they traveled to Clear Lake and knocked off the Lions (44-14).
Robert Frederickson made his return to the lineup after missing the first contest. He rushed for 213 yards on 30 carries and reached the end zone three times.
Senior Payton Kannuan leads the Lynx ground attack with 237 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns.
Zane Williams who stepped in for Frederickson the first week has 141 yards and two touchdowns.
Last week Gilbert won a tight 30-29 contest over Carlisle. They defeated Roland-Story 33-13 in their season opener.
Gilbert’s Cody Dvorak has rushed for 252 yards and four touchdowns, while Steven Lawrence has rushed for 194 and two scores.
Lawrence has also thrown for 215 yards on 16 of 28 passing and three scores.
South Central Calhoun (1-1, 0-0) at Southeast Valley (1-1, 0-0)
Southeast Valley rolled In their season opener (45-6) over Eagle Grove, but had a tough time against No. 3 Bishop Garrigan (41-28) last week.
Senior Nolan Brand has gotten off to a great start for the Jaguars. He has thrown for 597 yards on 26 of 38 passing and eight touchdowns. He has a 68.5 completion percentage.
Dakota Jaeschke has caught six balls, five for touchdowns and has 267 yards on the season.
Nolan Johnson has 10 catches for 186 yards and two scores.
Last week Brand threw for 309 yards on 14-for-21 passing and four scores.
Jaeschke caught three balls for two touchdowns and had 132 yards. Johnson and Kaleb Jondle also scored.
South Central Calhoun suffered a 56-20 loss to Carroll in their opener, but picked up a 50-8 win over IKM-Manning last Friday.
Hunter Muhlbauer was 9-for-10 passing for 212 yards and three touchdowns.
Kody Case was the recipient of Muhlbauer’s big night, catching six balls for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Chase McAlister caught the other touchdown.
Case also rushed for 105 yards on five carries.
Muhlbauer has thrown for 330 yards with five touchdown strikes.
Case has rushed for 144 yards and two scores. Case also had 160 yards receiving.
West Bend-Mallard (2-0, 0-0) at Kingsley-Pierson (1-1, 0-0)
West Bend-Mallard squeaked out a 12-10 victory in their opener. Last week they cruised to a 68-12 win over North Iowa.
The Wolverines rushed for 426 yards and had eight rushing touchdowns.
Lincoln Fehr had 103 yards on 10 carries and two scores. Quarterback Mke Fehr rushed for three scores and threw two touchdown passes. Thad Fogarty also ran for two scores.
Fogarty caught a touchdown and Danie Riesenberg had a receiving touchdown.
The Wolverines have five players with over 100 yards in the first two contests.

Humboldt (1-1, 0-0) at Spencer (1-1, 0-0)
It’s been a tale of two weeks for Humboldt. They dropped the season opener 53-14 to Webster City, but had a big Week 2, defeating Hampton-Dumont 51-14.
Senior quarterback Drew Thomas threw for 251 yards on 19-for-28 passing and six touchdowns.
Devon Clark caught eight balls for 119 yards and three scores. Colton Monson had six catches for 60 yards and two scores, while Elijah Sande caught one ball for a score.
Thomas has thrown for 385 yards on the season and eight scores.
Clark has caught 12 balls for 161 yards and three scores.
Spencer had a rough go last week, dropping a 35-0 contest to Central Lyon, a week after beating Emmetsburg 28-6.
Dylan Holst leads Spencer’s rushing attack with 187 yards and three scores.
