Strong debut for Triton rugby

CEDAR FALLS – The Iowa Central rugby team knocked off both the University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa here on Saturday.

The Tritons defeated the Hawkeyes, 23-10, and the Panthers, 39-17.

Against Iowa Matt Barker and Evian Akers scored on tries. Barker had two conversion kicks and three penalty kicks.

In the Northern Iowa contest, Darryl Couch scored on two tries, while Jordan Junkins, Barker and Akers each contributed one.

Barker had four conversion kicks and two penalty kicks.

“As a brand new program, we came in as underdogs,” said Iowa Central head coach Brent Nelson. “This was a huge thing for Iowa Central to come in and beat two long-standing programs.”

The Tritons will travel to Creighton this Saturday and face the Bluejays.
