Triton men take 2nd

MORAVIA – The Iowa Central men’s golf team opened their fall season with a runner-up finish here at the Midwest Collegiate Open.

The event was scheduled to be 36 holes, but weather cut it to just one round. It took place at The Preserve on Lath Rathbun.

The Tritons shot a 295, tying them with host William Penn. Iowa Central claimed second behind Mount Mercy.

Ross Grekoff and Wes Buntenbach were each all-tournament selections. Grekoff shot a 2-under 70 to place sixth, while Buntenbach was ninth with a 71.

“I thought our performance was fantastic to start the season,” ICCC head coach David Barwin said. “These guys are all back from last year and have very high expectations.”

Jorge Monagras shot a 76 to finish 23rd, Jackson Purdy was 34th with a 78 and Logan Yates placed 36th with a 79.

DMACC, which placed fifth, was paced by Alec Fuhs and his 72, good for 11th overall. Avery Fuhs carded a 77 for 29th and former St. Edmond all-state golfer Robert Flattery shot an 80 to place 44th.

The Triton women finished sixth overall behind Brittani Jenson’s 78 – good for fifth and all-tourney status.

Hannah Hoffa was 22nd with an 88. Hoffa knocked 15 strokes off her score from her round here a year ago.

Iowa Central returns to action on Sept. 8 at the NIACC Invitational at the Mason City Country Club.
