It’s good to be back

In high school, Hannah Myers was a standout athlete for Webster City in several sports.

Now that Myers can concentrate on just volleyball, she’s taken her game to a whole new level.

The Iowa Central freshman recorded four kills and five blocks in helping the Tritons open the season with a sweep of Marshalltown inside Hodges Fieldhouse here Wednesday night.

Scores were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-23.

Myers graduated from Webster City in 2015, but decided to not play sports last year.

“Hannah is just a really good athlete, and she showed that,” ICCC head coach Sara Horn said. “Our setter has been out for most of the preseason, so our timing was off a little, but when we were really in a groove, I saw a lot of good things.”

Nicole Steinmetz, one of several players back from a 22-win season a year ago that included advancing to the Region XI-B championship, had a team-high 12 kills, while Hayli Dorfmeyer added eight kills and a pair of blocks.

“It was good to get that first win,” Horn said. “I thought we had a lot of jitters in the first set, but that was to be expected. It’s always a different feel when you get out on the court and play a real match.”

Ashley Turcotte added five blocks and an ace for Iowa Central, while Taylor Drake had three aces and Katie Hoffman had two. Drake ended the first set with an ace on the Tigers, who were also opening their season.

The Tritons used a six-point rally to pull away from Marshalltown in the first. They concluded that opening set with 11 kills, four blocks and four aces.

“It was good to get out and get a match under our belts,” Horn said. “Now we know where we need to fine-tune things and continue to work on getting better.”

Iowa Central claimed the second set thanks to a 6-2 rally to finish it, while the Tigers gave them a run for their money in the third. After falling behind 15-12, though, the Tritons scored 11 of the next 16 points and Myers finished things off with a kill and a block.

Gabby Sullivan added five kills and Hoffman three in the win. Last year, Iowa Central was a perfect 11-0 at home.

The Tritons return to action this weekend in Wisconsin at the Battle for the Dells Tournament. Joining them will be ICCAC rivals No. 5 (NJCAA, Div. II) DMACC, eighth-ranked (Div. II) Kirkwood and No. 8 (Div. I) Indian Hills, along with the likes of top-rated (Div. II) Parkland, Carl Sandburg, Lake Michigan and Owens.

“It is definitely going to be an exciting tournament,” Horn said. “And it is easily one of the best ones in terms of talented teams so it will be a challenge for us.”

Iowa Central returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 7, to face the Eagles in a conference match.
