Dodger baseball team falls twice at Dowling
WEST DES MOINES – The Fort Dodge baseball team fell short twice to West Des Moines Dowling here Saturday.
Scores were 1-0 and 7-5.
“I definitely felt like the energy was there (Saturday),” said FDSH head coach Blake Utley. “Our kids played hard. It just came down to us making a few too many mistakes.”
Freshman Drake Miller and senior Cainen Hiracheta each doubled in the opener for the Dodgers (18-20 overall), while seniors Max Bodholdt and Sam Kolacia both added singles.
In the second contest, Bodholdt went 3-for-4 offensively.
Kolacia also recorded a pair of hits. Fort Dodge plated three runs in the first and two in the fifth.
“I felt like we were the better team in Game 2 (the Dodgers led 5-4 entering the bottom of the fifth),” Utley said. “We put pressure on them right away, but every time we scored, we allowed them to score.
“A majority of their runs came with two outs. We also had a couple of baserunning mistakes that took the wind out of our sails.”
Sophomore Tyrnan Lara (0-4) and senior Keaton Grove (0-1) were the losing pitchers for the Dodgers. Lara worked a complete game in the opener, allowing just five hits and the one Maroon run.
With the sweep, Dowling (28-10) has now won 10 straight games.
Next action for FDSH is Tuesday when they host second-ranked (Class 4A) and two-time defending state champion Southeast Polk (28-6).
