Another winner

Katie Donnelly hopes Friday’s offensive performance was just the start of better things to come for her St. Edmond softball team.

The Gaels (3-16 overall, 3-8 in the North Central Conference) defeated Clarion-Goldfield/Dows by a 13-1 final in three innings for their second win this week on Senior Night at Rogers Sports Complex.

After falling behind early, SEHS pulled away behind an eight-spot in the bottom of the second, followed by five more insurance scores in the third. Seven of the 12 Gael hits in the contest went for extra bases, including three homers.

“I was proud of our effort,” Donnelly said. “I think the girls are starting to zone in a little more mentally right now. We haven’t hit the ball like that all season long.

“All the (batting practice) we’ve been having is really starting to pay off.”

Lily Timmerman, a cleanup batter in the order, went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for St. Edmond with her second round-tripper of the year, two doubles and three runs scored. Her two-run longball, which brought home junior Megan Flattery, sealed the deal for the Gaels.

Freshman Erin Flattery and classmate Macey Mason delivered a pair of hits apiece for SEHS. Both freshman Jacque Oberg and Erin Flattery went deep for the first time in their varsity careers, while Erin Flattery and eighth-grader Jocy Timmerman added doubles. Oberg also drove in three, and sophomore Audrey Kolacia, Megan Flattery and Erin Flattery each crossed the dish twice.

Every Gael starter managed at least a hit or a sacrifice on Friday.

“I think the difference (last evening) was we felt like we had something to prove,” said Donnelly, whose squad was coming off back-to-back home losses the previous two nights to Webster City and defending Class 3A state qualifier Greene County. “The big thing is we just have to show up mentally every game.”

Lily Timmerman (2-13) posted all nine outs in the circle for St. Edmond, allowing just two hits and no earned runs. She walked one with three strikeouts.

“Lily continues to improve,” Donnelly said. “It was great to see her only give up two hits.”

Chloe Johnson’s two-out, bases-loaded walk in the top of the first knocked in Megan Askelsen with the only Cowgirl run. Senior Hannah Kapka and junior Hannah TerHark both contributed singles for Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (8-6, 4-6), which blanked CAL and Clear Lake in its two previous outings.

Defensively, Kolacia made an impressive running catch in deep center field to rob Faith Nelson of extra bases. Oberg also gunned down Kapka on a caught-stealing trying to get back to third.

Earlier this month, the Gaels dropped a 4-3 road decision to the Cowgirls.

Prior to Friday’s action, Lily Timmerman – the only senior on the SEHS roster – was recognized on the field.

Exactly half of the 80 total runs scored this season by St. Edmond have come in its three wins.

Following a short turnaround, the Gaels face North Polk (15-9) this morning at the Boone Invitational. First pitch is set for 8:45 a.m. The Cowgirls return to the diamond Monday, hosting Hampton-Dumont (9-6, 4-5).
