Tritons split with Southeastern

The Iowa Central baseball team settled for another split against Southeastern here Sunday at Ed Barbour Field.

After rallying for a 4-3 walkoff victory in the opener, the Tritons (19-4 overall, 9-3 in the ICCAC) dropped a 9-6 decision in the second contest.

“It was two good games with two good teams playing each other,” said ICCC head coach Rick Pederson. “We hit it hard at them in Game 1. We were just fortunate a couple balls fell in and we were able to pull it out.”

Fernando Villegas delivered a game-winning, two-run single for Iowa Central in the first game, bringing home Erich Gonzalez and Nick Boys.

Brent Jones, Gonzalez and Junior Aracena each collected two hits for the Tritons. Villegas also drove in two, while Aracena went deep.

Anderson DeLeon went the distance on the mound for Iowa Central, scattering 10 hits and three runs. DeLeon walked none and fanned four.

“DeLeon pitched well for us,” Pederson said. “He gave up three runs in the first inning, but he did an excellent job of holding them after that.”

Franyelyn Diaz went 3-for-5 in the finale for the Tritons, who saw a 6-5 lead slip away in the top of the seventh. Jones added a single and a homer, while Villegas chipped in two hits of his own.

Colby Carmichael took the loss in relief, allowing one hit and two runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.

“In Game 2, we just left too many guys on early (ICCC stranded 11 baserunners in the game),” said Pederson. “We could’ve been up three, four or even five runs. Their No. 9 hitter (Ben Schanding) killed us with two home runs on the day.”

The Blackhawks are now 22-12 and 9-3 on the season.

Next action for Iowa Central is Tuesday at Div. I foe Muscatine (15-15). First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
